Marie Antoinette Face Mask Recipe: The 18th-Century Glow-Up

Marie Antoinette – heard of her? She was THE beauty influencer of the 18th century and I have her face mask recipe for you!

Everything she wore or used quickly became desirable among the French and European elite. Hairstyles, powders, perfumes, and skincare rituals were copied almost immediately by aristocratic women trying to mirror the queen. All this in a time where hygiene had been strongly neglected (different times, different habits) for centuries. Along with many other things, Marie Antoinette brought her beauty standards and good hygiene to the court of Versailles. Once she wore it or used it, the court followed. Sound familiar? That’s indeed influencer behavior.

Among the towering hairstyles, rosy cheeks and 4 foot wide dresses, there were also luxurious milk and floral based skincare rituals. Here’s a recipe you can try at home for a brightening, tightening face mask that Marie would have used – and let’s be honest, it’s WAY more appetizing than the stewed pigeon water that everyone was using to cleanse at the time, ‘Eau de Pigeon’. Yikes!

All you’ll need is:

  • 1/3 cup of cell-renewing & exfoliating dry milk powder (organic & hormone free is best)
  • Brightening juice of one lemon
  • One egg white
  • 2 tsp circulation-stimulating cognac (or vodka)

Preparation:

  1. Blend all the ingredients together in a bowl, or a blender
  2. Apply the mixture to your face, with a brush or your hands, and let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry gently
  4. Apply your favorite floral water (Rose water was MA’s favorite) and follow that with a moisturizer
  5. Enjoy your soft supple skin and feel like a Queen!
